The icy rain came down upon the town without any warning. There were no dark clouds, no sounds of thunder, just a sudden downpour that Ilion had never seen before. The empty waterways and gutters were suddenly overflowing with much needed water, and nearly everyone was outside in awe.
They should have been running.
Vall leapt off the archway where he was perched and landed in the muddy alleyway. He brushed past two kids playing in the rain and continued onward, obviously in a hurry. The rains had just begun so he had plenty of time; however, he wanted to get this over and done with before they came…
He left the alleyway and entered the main street of the city. People were out in the streets filling their buckets and vases with fresh water, laughing and obviously unaware of what was happening. This was the first rain of the season and all they could see was a miracle. At least they would spend their last moments in happiness, and sadly in ignorance. He kept his eyes peeled for the first sign of her. People wore rags and they were all generally the same color. It was hard to tell anyone apart in this muddy rain. He scowled.
Maybe this won’t go as smoothly as I had hoped.
